Top 5 HDTV's For 2010

!9#: Top 5 HDTV's For 2010

If you haven't bought a new TV set for a good 4 or 5 years, then 2010 is the year to do so. The future of TV sets is about improved quality, slimness and 3D capability. CES 2010 in Las Vegas came to an end on the 10th of January. After taking a close look at the HDTVs on display, we've outlined the trends predicted for 2010 and shortlisted this year's most exciting launches.

After a year of speculation, top TV manufacturers confirmed that 2010 will be the year of 3D television - with manufacturers like LG, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba announcing that 3D TV sets will be on sale in the UK by April. With Sky announcing that 3D broadcasting will be available by October, we strongly recommend that if you are planning on investing in a new HDTV set, go for a 3D one.

OLED is also set to be the next big thing in picture quality. The only problem is that manufacturers like LG can only make OLED TV as big as 15 inches; however we expect to see bigger sets over the next few years as the technology inevitably advances. OLED (which stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode) produces super crisp pictures with unbelievable quality and definition.

So, that's enough small talk. Let's get down to our list of best HDTV's set to hit the shops in 2010...

LG Infinia LE9500 3D-Ready LED TV

For those who were lucky enough to be at this year's CES will testify that LG's 6.9mm model is the world's thinnest LED TV. LG's Infinia LE9500 3D-Ready LED TV comes equipped with an arsenal of innovations that includes 3D-Ready support, Skype capabilities and streaming media from Netflix, VUDU, YouTube, Napster and Yahoo! Widgets.. With this model, LG have broken conventions of LED TV design by transforming the screen into the actual speakers - which allows it to be so thin without compromising sound quality.

Toshiba Cell TVs

Besides using the same type of processor used in the PlayStation 3 and offering native 3D capability, Toshiba has packed its next generation of HDTVs with every feature we ever dreamed of. Toshiba also claims that, thanks to a new technology called TriVector Cell, TV series will be able to convert 2D content into 3D content in real time. No demo was available so we'll have to hold off our judgement for now.

Samsung LED 9000 Series

The 900 series is the next gen of Samsung's LED LCD TVs and the flagship model the Samsung C9000 is perhaps one of the slickest TV sets we've ever set eyes on. Just so you can comprehend the C900's sleekness: the model is the same width as a number two pencil. The Samsung C900 is of course 3D, and is also capable of converting 2D content into 3D, again no demo was available.

LG 15-inch OLED TV

Despite its size, the LG 15-inch OLED TV is the biggest possible OLED TV to date, but give a few more years and we'll see 26, 36, 47-inch OLED TV sets. OLED is the future of HDTV, this LG OLED produces super crisp picture with and absolutely stunning picture quality.

Sony 3D Bravia TV

As expected, Sony also caught the 3D flu that contaminated the world's top television manufacturers and also introduced a new series of 3D TVs at this year's CES. Sony will offer three separate lines of 3D Bravia HDTVs. The LX900 series, due out this summer, is available in size up to 60 inches and includes an edge-lit LED backlight system. Other features include 240Hz processing, integrated WiFi and two active shutter glasses for watching 3D content. It features what Sony calls a Monolithic industrial design with a smooth glass surface from edge to edge.

The consumer electronics giant also used the 3D wave to introduce its first 3D-capable Blu-ray player with WiFi connectivity and instant streaming of online content.

LG Infiniatm LX9500 47 Inch 3D LED TV

!9#: LG Infiniatm LX9500 47 Inch 3D LED TV

LG Infiniatm 47 Inch 3D TV

With 3D movies now starting to storm the box office (think Avatar, Star Trek, Monsters inc etc) it was probably obvious that a similar surge in demand for home 3D would follow. Certainly there needed to be the content for home 3D but now that seems to be hitting the market with 3D Blu Ray DVDs and satellite content, the race for 3D TV dominance is on.

In my opinion, some of the early 3D TVs were put out to market a little too early, before the technology was 100% sound. For example, if you were watching fast paced action and an image came out of the screen towards you it could blur quite significantly. I found this to be a particular problem in the lower corners of the field of vision.

The only thing that is certain is change and 3D TV technology continues to change and move forward at great pace. The new LG Infiniatm range introduces yet another leap forward with 480Hz technology.

The new LG Infiniatm LX9500 47 Inch 3D TV takes picture quality to a new and stunning level. What's changed? Well, it's still 1080p (the current maximum), but with a screen refresh rate doubled to 480Hz it brings a stunning new picture clarity. It's true I have a habit of "biggin" up LED and HD TV, but LG have produced something worth "biggin" up here!

I honestly didn't believe pictures could get better over the top of the range Samsung 240Hz 1080p, but LG have managed it. And it is most noticeable in the 3D space.

Obviously the competition will have to catch up to 480Hz as well. But, a current top of the range Samsung at 240Hz is still hovering around k. At the time of writing the LX9500 comes in at just .3k. How have LG managed it?

Based on that LG are going to be tough to beat in this new higher end LED/3D market. And, LG are doing all they can to dominate. I was having a Skype chat with my HD Buddy in the U.K, Brad. Sky TV are the biggest satellite broadcaster over there and have just announced that they have made LG their 3D TV partners in the U.K. Sky dominate the satellite market in many European countries and this deal will give LG a massive sales kick in Europe.

The LG Full LED 3D TV Infinia LX9500 is a stunning piece of kit and surprisingly easy to use and set up. In truth, it's about time LED set up was made a little simpler.

The LX9500 is a direct lit model as opposed to edge lit. Normally direct lit TVs are thicker but at 31mm this set again moves technology a step forward. It also comes with LG "Netcast" included. This gives you direct Internet Entertainment access, at last! I was also very impressed that for the price you also get two pairs of active shutter 3D glasses included.

This lets you get into 3D straight away and of course saves you a couple of hundred dollars or so into the bargain. Well done LG!

If you read the LG sales media, they are calling the 480Hz "TruMotion - a revolution in picture quality". I really can't argue. In particular the 3D picture is far clearer. As I have said fast-moving images that come towards you needed attention in 3D and for the most part this TV gets it right, and fast-action is now far better.

And, I think 2D pictures are improved as well. To be fair it's not as marked an improvement as the 3D pictures but it's just as amazing. In a way that doesn't really do the picture quality justice but I have run out of superlatives. I think I'm going to have to "tone down" some of my older writings as my descriptions are not keeping pace with the pictures improvements!

The pictures are brilliantly razor-sharp and the color is like the brightest sunny day you could image. Contrast with the blackest blacks I have ever seen, it really is the best TV viewing I have seen and I can't image how LG provide this quality at just over k

If you're thinking of joining the 3D revolution the LG Infiniatm LX9500 47 Inch 3D TV could not be a better starting point, it's an amazing viewing experience and a superb introduction to 3D TV - enjoy!

Flat Screen TV Buying Guide - How To Choose a TV That Best Suits Your Needs

!9#: Flat Screen TV Buying Guide - How To Choose a TV That Best Suits Your Needs

If you're looking for a flat screen TV buying guide, but you don't want a guide that is overly complicated or takes you too long to read, then look no further. In this concise guide, we're going to jump straight to the point and highlight the important key areas you need to consider. First we're going to take a look at the main types of TV available, then take a look at the number 1 brands out there, and then we'll take a look at the main features you need to look for.

What Are the Main Types of TV?

Now, I'm assuming you already know the kind of size TV you want, so here we focus on more important things. In terms of the screen technology available, there are basically three main types of TV screen: LCD, LED, and Plasma.

LCD TVs

Thin, lightweight. Come in a range of sizes. Good for bright rooms. More brands and sizes to choose from than Plasma. Tend to cost more than Plasma screens of the same size, but this is becoming less so as time goes on.

LED TVs

A type of LCD screen, but with different lighting. Uses LED to light the LCD particles, as opposed to Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps, as were used in older LCD sets. More energy efficient. Longer lifespan - doesn't degrade like older style LCDs.

Plasma TVs

Good for very large screens (42 inches or larger). Can be viewed from almost any angle. Good for fast action, e.g. games, sports or action movies.

Which Are the Best Brands?

Samsung

Market leader and innovator. Pioneer of LED technology in LCD TVs. Very popular brand - probably the best, if you had to name just one top brand. Definitely the best-selling in the UK, anyway. Superb picture quality.

LG

Another popular brand. Offers a wide range of plasma screen, but also makes LCD and LED. Produces some high-end models called Infinia.

Panasonic

Market leader for Plasma TVs. Also makes LCD. Makes some very large screens. One of the first to offer 3D.

Toshiba

Offers a wide range of TVs, from low-priced to high-end models called the Cinema Series. Have plans to start making 3D sets soon.

VIZIO

Newer company (started in 2002). Makes LCD TVs. Brands itself as "America's no. 1 LCD TV brand"

What Are the Main Features to Look For in a TV?

There are many different features that TVs have these days, but here are some of the key things to look out for.

Screen Refresh Rate (Frame Rate)

For LCD, go for new 120Hz or 240Hz screens. Plasma has very fast transition between frames, so copes better with fast digital scenes.

Internet

PC input - some TVs have PC input, so you can surf the net on your TV. Internet @ TV - some Samsung TVs come with a function called Internet @ TV, which gives access to the internet while you watch TV. Some other new TVs also allow internet access to services such as YouTube, Netflick, Facebook, etc.

Connections

Wi-Fi - connect to your home network. HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface. PC input - as mentioned above.

Easy Settings & Specific Modes

Game Mode - some TVs (e.g. Samsung) come with a specific mode for game playing, which enhances the sound and image specifically for this purpose. Picture Wizard - this is a simple step-by-step wizard that comes with LG TVs and helps you to easily adjust your picture settings. Some TVs can even detect the lighting of your room and automatically optimize your screen settings.

The Choice is Yours

So, as you can see, there are many different factors that can determine which type of TV you are going to buy. Once you have decided on the size of the screen you then need to decide on the screen type, whether it's Plasma or LCD. Once you have decided on that, it's best to take a look at the brand that is the leader in that particular technology. For example, if you want an LED style LCD TV, then Samsung is probably your best bet. However, if you decided on Plasma, then LG is a good choice. Once you have made that decision, it's really just a case of keeping an eye out for the features you want, and then reading reviews from existing customers, to see whether it's a good model to buy.
