Flat Screen TV Buying Guide - How To Choose a TV That Best Suits Your Needs

!9#: Flat Screen TV Buying Guide - How To Choose a TV That Best Suits Your Needs

If you're looking for a flat screen TV buying guide, but you don't want a guide that is overly complicated or takes you too long to read, then look no further. In this concise guide, we're going to jump straight to the point and highlight the important key areas you need to consider. First we're going to take a look at the main types of TV available, then take a look at the number 1 brands out there, and then we'll take a look at the main features you need to look for.

What Are the Main Types of TV?

Now, I'm assuming you already know the kind of size TV you want, so here we focus on more important things. In terms of the screen technology available, there are basically three main types of TV screen: LCD, LED, and Plasma.

LCD TVs

Thin, lightweight. Come in a range of sizes. Good for bright rooms. More brands and sizes to choose from than Plasma. Tend to cost more than Plasma screens of the same size, but this is becoming less so as time goes on.

LED TVs

A type of LCD screen, but with different lighting. Uses LED to light the LCD particles, as opposed to Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps, as were used in older LCD sets. More energy efficient. Longer lifespan - doesn't degrade like older style LCDs.

Plasma TVs

Good for very large screens (42 inches or larger). Can be viewed from almost any angle. Good for fast action, e.g. games, sports or action movies.

Which Are the Best Brands?

Samsung

Market leader and innovator. Pioneer of LED technology in LCD TVs. Very popular brand - probably the best, if you had to name just one top brand. Definitely the best-selling in the UK, anyway. Superb picture quality.

LG

Another popular brand. Offers a wide range of plasma screen, but also makes LCD and LED. Produces some high-end models called Infinia.

Panasonic

Market leader for Plasma TVs. Also makes LCD. Makes some very large screens. One of the first to offer 3D.

Toshiba

Offers a wide range of TVs, from low-priced to high-end models called the Cinema Series. Have plans to start making 3D sets soon.

VIZIO

Newer company (started in 2002). Makes LCD TVs. Brands itself as "America's no. 1 LCD TV brand"

What Are the Main Features to Look For in a TV?

There are many different features that TVs have these days, but here are some of the key things to look out for.

Screen Refresh Rate (Frame Rate)

For LCD, go for new 120Hz or 240Hz screens. Plasma has very fast transition between frames, so copes better with fast digital scenes.

Internet

PC input - some TVs have PC input, so you can surf the net on your TV. Internet @ TV - some Samsung TVs come with a function called Internet @ TV, which gives access to the internet while you watch TV. Some other new TVs also allow internet access to services such as YouTube, Netflick, Facebook, etc.

Connections

Wi-Fi - connect to your home network. HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface. PC input - as mentioned above.

Easy Settings & Specific Modes

Game Mode - some TVs (e.g. Samsung) come with a specific mode for game playing, which enhances the sound and image specifically for this purpose. Picture Wizard - this is a simple step-by-step wizard that comes with LG TVs and helps you to easily adjust your picture settings. Some TVs can even detect the lighting of your room and automatically optimize your screen settings.

The Choice is Yours

So, as you can see, there are many different factors that can determine which type of TV you are going to buy. Once you have decided on the size of the screen you then need to decide on the screen type, whether it's Plasma or LCD. Once you have decided on that, it's best to take a look at the brand that is the leader in that particular technology. For example, if you want an LED style LCD TV, then Samsung is probably your best bet. However, if you decided on Plasma, then LG is a good choice. Once you have made that decision, it's really just a case of keeping an eye out for the features you want, and then reading reviews from existing customers, to see whether it's a good model to buy.

If you are talking about LED TVs, the Infinia series is definitely one of the top names in the business. Here, we review the LG 32LE7900 which is the latest addition to the multi-awarded lineup. Is it good enough to deserve its name brand? Let's take a closer look and check if it deserves its place in the Infinia series.

The LG 32LE7900 LED TV has an ultra-slim design similar to other Infinia 7 models. The ultra-slim frame gives it a very distinct, yet elegant look. It has a piano black finish, which enables the device to blend to any environment. The LG 32LE7900 is significantly lighter than most LED TVs in its class, weighing in at 26 lbs. Its weight actually makes it an ease to mount or move around.

Great design is just one of the elements that make up a great LED TV. It should also possess exceptional picture quality and the LG 32LE7900 is a good example of both. LG added their TruMotion technology in the 32LE7900, which enables it to play movies without any signs of image blurring. TruMotion has a refresh rate of 100 Hz, which is fast enough to capture each frame of movement regardless of its speed. This kind of speed will come in handy for scenes that require have a lot movement such as sports games and action movies.

The LG 32LE7900 has an amazing contrast ratio of 5,000,000: 1. In fact, it is highest contrast ratio in its class. Unlike most ultra-slim LED TV, the lighting on the 32LE7900 is distributed very well. It was able to provide the blackest black and whitest white. The device has a resolution of 1920 x 1080p that makes it perfect companion for gaming consoles and computers.

The LG 32LE7900 is equipped with Bluetooth technology that lets you play music and watch pictures from a laptop, PDA or mobile phone without copying them. On its side, it has 4 HDMI ports and a multifunctional USB port. The USB can be used to play video streaming from flash disks, external data storage devices, and memory card readers.

The internet connectivity on the LG 32LE7900 definitely deserves a place among the best. What makes it stand out is its no contrast Freeview HD. Freeview HD lets gives its users access to online HD content such as movies, music videos, and news. It is also incorporated with the latest versions of DNLA and Wireless AV, which lets it stream HD movies, pictures, and music from compatible mobile phones, computers, and other multimedia devices.

Most LED manufacturers hold back on installing quality internal speakers because of the limited space. The amazing thing about the LG 32LE7900 is its internal speakers. The two satellite speakers are just a couple of millimeters big, but it packs quite a punch. Clear Voice II has also been added to the device's audio arsenal. This technology optimizes the human voice by reducing any feedback and background sound. The result is a more audible voice quality.

To conclude this review of the LG 32LE7900, it is a great 32-inch LED TV. It is even good enough to give other LED TV in its class a lot of competition. The combination of seamless design, exquisite picture quality, and amazing audio quality makes it totally worth reviewing if you're looking for a new TV..

3 Cool Gadgets to Beat the Summer Heat

!9# 3 Cool Gadgets to Beat the Summer Heat

Hot sweaty summer days are approaching. The mercury is already touching the 40C mark! And so, you must be prepared with summer gadgets to remain cool this summer. Here are 3 new gadgets that you would want to have badly.

1. Apple iPad

Easily, Apple's most hyped and best-selling product ever is the new iPad. It's popularity can be estimated by the fact that Apple has sold over a million iPads in just 28 days of its 3rd April launch.

The iPad is a gadget placed "between a smartphone and a netbook". With a 9.7" touch-screen, it offers an incredible interface to die for. Though criticized by many for not having a camera or multitasking or Flash support, the App Store offers thousands of Apps to extend it.

Officially, it is not yet available in India, but can be bought from the US itself. However, on eBay and 20north.com, the average price for the 64 GB WiFi version is Rs 43000.

2. LG Infinia 47LE8500

The E8500 series of the LG LCD TVs, produces the best off-angle viewing than many LCDs. The 47" screen offers a 1920x1080 resolution with pretty accurate colors. The LE8500's sleek design includes a flush face and transparent edges around the frame.

With an optional WiFI support, it supports streaming media from Netflix, Vudu and YouTube.

At 99, it's an expensive piece of stylish and feature-rich addition to your pile of gadgets.

3. Apple iMac

The "ultimate all-in-one" is how Apple describes the iMac. (Personal note: Yes, they are right) With a staggering 21.5" and 27" display, and the Intel i5 and i7 Core processors, the iMac offers the best-in-class performance.

The beautiful and starkly designed screen can hold unto 16 GB of memory with unto 1 TB of storage.

The USP of the monster is probably the operating system - Mac. It offers a clean and easy-to-learn and use interface, with claims of being "virus and malware proof".

What's even good is the wireless keyboard and mouse - also called the Magic Mouse. Believe me, you'll simply love the experience of working with that 'tail-less mice'.

In Indian market, the 21.5" model is sold for about Rs. 65000 and the 27" model for Rs 90000 with a bunch of optional upgrades.

So, that's my short list of the gadgets to flaunt this summer. These might be heavy on pocket for many of the Indians, but you pay only for what you get (at least in this case).
